William's Belated Birthday Dinner + Kate Graces Marie Claire Cover

Hello to you all,
It has been revealed Prince William enjoyed a belated birthday dinner on July 2 (a week and a half after his actual birthday) with Kate and a group of close friends at Russian themed restaurant Mari Vanna in Knightsbridge, London.

Mari Vanna
Celebrating the Russian theme the group enjoyed flavoured vodka shots with William reportedly looking 'a little worse for wear'. Kate refrained from drinking much and left at 1 a.m while William and his friends stayed on until 3 a.m. before going to a friend's house for a party.

A look at 'The Fireplace Room' described as 'perfect for dinner parties'.

Mari Vanna is the new London branch of an international Russian chain with sister restaurants in Moscow, St Petersburg and New York. It is named after a Russian grandmother who welcomed diners into her home. It is aimed at Russians abroad and diners hoping to experience Russian cuisine.

Giles Goran from The Times wrote the following review about Mari Vanna but was distracted from the food :)

'It is the pleasantest of all surprises. Like something out of Eastern fairytales all chintzy and cottagey. The food is good, but it hardly matters, I spend most of the time surreptitiously looking around the room at the most beautiful women I have ever seen, anywhere'.

It sounds like William and Kate had a wonderful night with friends at Mari Vanna. For any of you considering visiting London it's a wonderful place to spend an evening.

Kate is the cover girl every magazine editor wants and upon first look it appears Marie Claire South Africa has scooped the industry's biggest coup of the moment but on closer inspection the 'photo' is actually an artist's impression.

From the Marie Claire article

'We were so inspired by her fairytale wedding and her life as a modern - day princess, which is why we elected Kate Middleton as our cover star for the August issue. The cover is actually a hyper real illustration, meant to be a fan art tribute to fashion's new royal icon.'

Marie Claire South Africa
Five illustrators dressed Kate in a print dress by designer Clive Rundle posing with her hand on her hip. No doubt Zimbabwe born Rundle who describes his designs as 'an extension of his whole thought process' will be hoping the cover encourages fans of Kate's style to look at his pieces.

A look at pieces from Mr Rundle's Summer 2011-2012 Collection. Not typically Kate's style, are they?

An up close look at Kate's face on the cover. The illustration appears to be based on the engagement photos. What do you think?

Hey, Charlotte! What a lovely post! Thank you for sharing!

  3. While I love the artistic aspect of the Marie Claire cover, I think the whole approach is a little sneaky and unethical. Using a portrait (neat and all) nonetheless bespeaks this attitude :"Since the Duchess wont' pose, why not just simulate heras a drawing?". Don't know. Again, I still think it's a neat art, but there's something that smacks of "identity theft" to this. Just my thoughts, but perhaps I'm not considering all the "pro and con" arguments. Silvia

    1. I just cannot help sharing your feelings. Where will the medias stop? First, this horrible picture depicting Kate with rotten, yellow teeth. Then the honey moon photos. And now this photoshopped cover. And all in one week. If nothing is done, I am afraid that there will be no limit to media intrusion. I really hope Buckingham Palace will react!

  4. I am very curious whether this was done with the Duchess' permission. Thoughts?

I doubt it. I believe she would have had to get it cleared by the Queen. And the Queen would not let her be on the cover of Vogue.

  5. This artist should have worked on the commemorative coins. :) Personally, I don't see a problem with this cover; Kate is a public figure and SOME of this is to be expected. I do, however, have a problem with the honeymoon photos being published. Private time is private time.

  7. I don't know about that Russian food being the best thing to serve a Duchess. It looks like fried Quesadillas you would find in a grease trap in Alabama.

But at least that Magazine cover REALLY brings out colour in Kate's eyes.

Keep up the Great Work at this Blog! I don't what us Kate fans would do with out it. The one stop shop for those of us who just can't get enough of the Duchess of Cambridge!

  8. Agreed that it looks to be from an engagement photo.

I think photoshopping her head onto somebody else's body is totally wrong - but - that said...she does look very nice. I want to see the other clothes they had her "wearing".

Great post Charlotte- But I think the Duchess eyes looked to be blue. I thought her eyes were green. And her hair looks lighter then normal (with a little bit of gray).

And to the person who posted wondering if the Duchess know about this, in my opinion I don't think so. The Queen would not let her be on teh cover of Vogue so I doubt very much if the Queen would allow her to be on this cover.

Can't wait until Thursday. To bad we will not get to see her Prince with her.

  10. They sort of say on the cover that it's not real, but I wonder how many people got hoodwinked into buying this magazine? Some time ago a South African magazine (I can't remember which one) brought the same issue out with two covers, and got into real trouble for essentially selling the same issue twice. Their response was that people should have seen the date was the same, but seriously. I feel the same about this cover, and I'd expect more from Marie Claire. This is something Huisgenoot would do.

  11. The restaurant looks really fancy!!! Was the magazine cover painted by an artist? Or was her image superimposed on the body? Im not sure,,either ways the artist has done an amazing job bringing out her beauty :))
    Thanks Charlotte!

  12. Charlotte it seems I am always behind on the news!!! I just tweeted the Marie Claire article to you! LOL!
The cover is interesting but I don't know how I feel about them creating an image of her...on one hand everyone is snapping pictures of her without her permission so this isn't really that different, but there is something kind of underhanded about this. With that being said, the artwork is pretty cool (although I seriously doubt she'd wear something like that! ;) )
That party sounds like fun...hope I can ring in my 30th in a similar, fun fashion (don't know if I can still last til 3am though...!)
    As always, awesome post!

  13. Friends, I just read the rumor about the possible problems that William and Kate are having at marriage, etc., etc... The report cites a source who says that William regreted about he married Kate, because seeing Harry and the other friends, all unmarried, and he acknowledged that married very young and, thus, no longer wants to be more "stuck" with Kate and prefers to be in the company of friends. So, like many here, I think it's all just rumors. But from the moment that the stories begin to say that William went out with Guy Pelly (this was proven by pictures), William and Harry was surfing with friends (this was proven by pictures as well), William was celebrating his birthday and Kate left early, while he continued celebrating with friends, etc, etc, this gives rise to make people start to believe in these rumors. If, supposedly, again, supposedly, it is true that William acknowledged to be too young to marry, I say, no, he wasn't very young when he married and had enough maturity to know what he wanted in life. It is good that the man, and sorry if I'm generalizing, wake up as soon as possible and recognize that life is passing and friends will getting in the past and the person with whom he can share his life and his confidence is his wife. For now, I'll refrain from comments about the cover of Marie Claire. Kisses!

    1. I think its good that Kate gives William space to hang out with his friends. That is a sign of a healthy relationship.

    2. Both William and Kate are still their own persons. Why should they limit themselves if they have trust in each other? Wills does not lie to Kate as he goes out with Harry and his friends and Kate does not lie to William when she goes out with Pippa and her friends. And that is all that matters. Because if love is only a will to possess, then it is not love and the marriage fails.

I think that both William and Kate can have friends of either sex, they can do things separately or together, that does not mean they are being unfaithful to each other or that they are no more in love. Going out for some drinks is not all that uncommon and often includes people of both sexes. Why freak out over who their friends are?

I would rather freak out over the "alledged" sources who can be anyone on the internet -we all know they count many haters- trying to destroy the beautiful relationship shared by this young nice couple.

And I am sure William does not regret about he marrying Kate. Nor did he say that he did want to more "stuck" with her.

As for me, I have the utmost trust in this young couple. And I feel really sorry for them. Because it seems as though some of those alledged "sources" would like the story of Charles and Diana to be repeated again and again!

Best regards and rays of sun from the South of France!

Ana Laura- Have you seen the pictures of the Duchess & her Prince at Wimbledon? If not please take a good look at them. It show's the two of them so in love. They are laughing, joking and giving each other that look of love they have between them.
In some of them they act like there is nobody else around but the two of them. Seeing these pictures should give you the answer to all these rumors.

I myself get so up set about all these crazy rumors so I can imgine what it does for the royal couple.

  14. The magazine cover is cute and clever and flattering to Kate.

The Russian restaurant thing is odd, however, especially when you consider all the Russian/British historical tragedies. I thought that Kate was all about historical significance in everything she did. This, for me, was the one exception.

Maybe it's just a cool London restaurant but...there must be lots of others as well.

There is nothing written that either the Duchess or her Prince picked the restaurant. Maybe one of their friends decided where the dinner was going to be.

In my opinion there was nothing wrong with them going to the Russian restaurant for dinner.

  15. I am curious if the article on the birthday dinner was the one from Now, I had read that that is not a reliable publication. Was this something addressed by other sources? I had dismissed the other nasty article from the US tabloid because it and it's sister tabloids are a waste . Also the person writing the article has an agenda and it was not written as if fact, but as speculation from a third party. Sometimes though, where there is smoke, there is fire. William is always portrayed as a thoughtful young man who thinks everything through, so I'm not sure I buy the tied down theory. It seems to me Harry would give up his party ways for a nice stable relationship, so why would William throw his away. I do find Williams need for alcohol disturbing, his behavior is very unbecoming a grown man, a husband and as a future King.

    1. Huh? He's a grown man, a pilot, a husband who is busy ALL THE TIME. His bday was one of the few times he has to "catch up." He might have gone to another party but it is YOU who equates that with more drinking. Maybe you need to stop projecting. silvia

  16. Come on! Give the guy a break... even grown ups have a big night out once in a while. They were with their personal friends, at a private function! As for Kate leaving early - if any of you have been married (and/or in a relationship for a long time) - you'll know that it's not uncommon at all to want to call it a night at 1am and let your spouse keep on partying. William wanting to spend time with his brother surfing instead of heading to Wimbledon? Well, it allowed both of them to have some quality time with their siblings - which is also quite nice for them. All this speculation is just hilarious... suppose it probably comes from the same people who claimed that the palace doctor confirmed the Duchess was barren. It really is ridiculous.

I agree with the recent posts regarding the Prince & his beautiful Duchess going out with friends for his birthday. I don't think it was so bad that the Duchess went home at 1am and William continued to party with his friends at one of their home. At least he was not in some club with a bunch of crazy women around. And they do not say if any of the other guys were married or not. I believe alot of their friends are married so if that is true then the other wives went home too.

And as far as the Duchess going to Wimbledon with her sister and William going surfering with his brother, there is nothing wrong with that. It gives them each time to spend with the siblings with they don't much time to do. Whe I was married my husband also went backpacking with his buddies for a week and at times went out with his friends. I did not mind that.

People are making to much out of all os this. I feel they are completely in love, still love spending their private time together but enjoys spending tiem with their friends and family. Both have a very busy schedule and in teh near futher it will get even busier. Lte's just wish them well and bless their marriage and hope for the best.

Any information on the time of the Duchess's engagement on Thursday? And why the Prince will not attend with her? I just love seeing them together during engagements, they make such a great couple and team.

  19. Without addressing the journalistic ethics involved in the Marie Claire cover illustration, the artist did a fabulous job of putting highlights into Kate's hair. If I were she, I'd take that cover along to my next appointment with my colorist!

I disagree with the magazine's use of Kates supposed pose for them. Most would purchase magazine before reading that it's not the Duchess and that's false advertising! And in response to one of the above comments.....are you kidding me? I have never seen two people more in tune and in love. My spouse is a teacher and trust me, spending day in day out for two months...I need the space and am ready for him to return to school...that's normal for a partnership and more importantly healthy.

  21. I read all your opinions about William and Kate, and as always, I am always open to healthy debate. I respect everyone's opinion, above all else. But only time will tell whether this behaviour of William with friends will be healthy for the wedding or not. Kisses!

It is indeed good news to see the work of the young royals. What do you think?

Well, I just cannot wait to see Kate at the National Gallery today. LOL
